It has been a bit chilly here in Southern California lately. You make your first attempt to turn on your heater to no avail. It doesn’t work. Frequently this is due to your pilot light needing to be lit. A pilot light is a small gas flame, usually natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas, which serves as an ignition source for a more powerful gas burner found on stoves/ovens, dryers and in this case, your heater.
What should I do next? Reach out to your local power utility company first to request a gas appliance check. Keeping your natural gas appliances in safe working condition by signing up online for an appliance check-up is a convenient way to schedule and manage your request. This service is free of charge. Typically all you will need is your 10 digit account number when calling in. At the time of your appointment, they will check the operation of your furnace and light the pilot if needed.
If a problem is found, the utilities’ company technician will let you know. If they cannot get your heater working, please reach out to your landlord to call a Heating, Ventilation, Air-Condition (HVAC) company to come out to evaluate the situation further. Happy Heating!!!
