Step 1 – Check for drafts – This can be done by taking a candle around doors and windows. If the flame moves this is generally a good sign the door or window needs caulking or is in need of new weatherizing.

Step 2 – Have your furnace inspected – Hire an HVAC professional to test your unit for efficiency including checking for leaks and changing the air filter.

Step 3 – Test your home safety devices – This step includes checking the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working correctly.

#5 – Maintain landscaping – Cut back shrubs, bushes and plant new flowers as recommended by your local gardening center.
